day 5

Jubilate Deo

Today there was one thing which was the subject of Synod, Bishops. The morning and much of the afternoon was spent in Holy Trinity electing our next primate. The Church was hot, and there was a deadlock in sight throughout the day. I was always remember the thunderous applause when the results was announced, which continued as the Order of Bishops re entered, and the beautiful singing of Jubilate Deo, as the Order was returning. I truly felt the Holy Spirit.

The interesting part of the rest of the day was that most of it I was absent for. The evening had two presentations, and my diocese decided to have dinner. Dinner was wonderful and took up most of the evening. I returned for the investiture of the Indigenous Bishop. And then go out for a dinner in Winnipeg with the other Youth Members.

I was always remember this as one in which the Holy Spirit moved in the church. Its messy but wonderful.

Day 4

We are One in The Spirit,
We are One in The Lord.
We are One in The Spirit,
We are One in The Lord.
And we pray that all unity
may one day be restored.
And they'll know we are Christians by our love,

By our Love,
Yes they'll know we are Christians by our love.

Today was the main day with the Lutherans. It was an interesting day, I was asked to be a communion assistant today, so it meant that I had to miss home group. When I arrived at the convention centre, it happened that a few of the buttons on my coat fall off, so i had to run back and find a sewing kit. In all I was about an hours late for the celebrations. What was different was that the entire day took place in the context of a celebration of Holy Communion, the service begun at 9 in the morning and was over around 3:30. After the service was a reception by the religious orders in Canada, a cause very dear to my heart.

That night also marked Stephen Andrews becoming the prolocutor of General Synod. I was very pleased by the election. After plenary, I went to a party in the York Hotel, It was nice to get to know the other youth delegates better. Then I hurried off to bed.

day 3

The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended,
The darkness falls at Thy behest;
To Thee our morning hymns ascended,
Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

We thank Thee that Thy church, unsleeping,
While earth rolls onward into light,
Through all the world her watch is keeping,
And rests not now by day or night.

Today was the first real day of Synod. The morning session was mainly spent on items on the no debate list and the afternoon with presentations and seminars. The nominations for prolocutor were announced, and I fear that the election of the big coffee pot is as hard as a choice as the election of the big monkey (just a little really bad humour).

Today we had lunch with the other youth delegates, which yours truly arranged. Then we traveled to a nearby candy store to get supplies for the days ahead. Being a big sugar freak, I of course got the biggest pixy stick I could find, and for awhile was leading the other youth members present down the street in solemn possession, as the carrier of the processional pixy stick...one of those things you do when sleep deprived and stressed.

This evening several youth members enjoyed a night at the pubs, before the 6:45 breakfast with the candidates for primate tomorrow. I for one could not get up this morning at 7:00, so I doubt that I will be able to get up for that time and go to the pub. Instead I went to a reception of Anglican Colleges in Canada, It was well attended and I enjoyed it.

The daily Anglican Journal we get as members of Synod, asked what’s in your survivor kit today, I learned what it is, time for reflection alone. This occurred today on my supper break when I was going down the water slide and doing laps. Of course when the Primate drops in, and your singing "lift high the cross" it may look a bit strange, but of course The day Thou gravest, Lord, is ended.

Opening service

Lift high the cross
the love of Christ proclaim
till all the world adore his scared name
Come, Christian people
sing your praises, shout!
if we are silent even rocks cry out!

I had dinner then I quickly boarded a bus heading to St. John's Cathedral for the opening service. Sitting besides me on the bus was a delegate who just arrived, and was given a room which was already occupied. On the bus also Justice Stephenson and I had a nice talk on the way to the church, and he pointed out a few interesting sites in the commentary of the cathedral.

I quickly did what every Anglican should have done and took a seat in the church without reading in my bulletin that we gathered at the river. When a delegate form my diocese said to me, let's head down to the river, I initially thought ok why, and then read my bulletin.

We went down by the river, and the youth delegates were gathering there. We were told to form a circle around the primatial party, and then told to clear a way for the Lieutenant Governor. The service begun with a smuggling ceremony, which was soon interrupted by an arrest with mace of a visitor in the park, unaware of the important events which were taking part.

We entered the cathedral and it took a few minutes before we were fully in the church. Once we were the Vice Regal salute begun and we proceeded with the service as usual, with the Primate's Address in the place of the sermon, and the recession forgetting to leave the church until the hymn was over and people were starting to clear out.

The reception was across the park in a Ukraine Church, and of course it had to storm to get us very wet while going across the park.

Over all it was a wonderful service and an experience I will never forget, never alone recover from.

day 2 pre-service

In the name of Christ we gather,
in the name of Christ we sing,
celebrate new vows,
new promise of a life's whole offering,
here ordained to lead God's people
at the Gospel's beckoning.

Well this morning was my morning off for General Synod. The orders of day was to have breakfast (7:30), go see Winnipeg, head to the hotel for lunch, and then hit the pool before orientation, however what was fun is that I found out that Synod has a way of sneaking in, no matter where in the city you are. Today I toured the legislature, and saw the city headed back to hotel, and didn't even make it in the front door before the gathering begun. I saw old friends and made some new ones. At lunch we had a members of the Brothers of Holy Cross at our table, we had a nice long chat. Then after lunch I promised myself that I would only spend a few minutes looking at exhibits before hitting the waves, a few minutes turned into an hour...oops. Next up was orientation, asked a few questions got to know kinda whats going on, and then back to the room and hitting the pool. Of course going to the pool requires you to walk through the lobby, in my case it was in a towel and swimming trucks, and of course who should appear are people I haven't seen for awhile, and the Anglican Journal to interview me and take my picture. soon after, I finally made it to the pool, hit the waves and water slide. Then forgot about the time change and headed for supper an hour early...oops!

The lesson this day in Synod is it is in the name of Christ that we gather, and he gives us our orders of the day..whether touring the city or going down a water slide singing "In the name of Christ we gather!"

day 1!

Alleluia! sing to Jesus! His the scepter, His the throne.
Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone.
Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood.
Jesus out of every nation has redeemed us by His blood.

These are the words I am associate the most closely with Synods. After all every Algoma Synod I remember begun with these words. As I boarded the Cherryhill bus on Monday afternoon headed to the airport, it was these words which were in my head as i watched my girlfriend walk away from the bus stop, parted for 8 days. It was also these words which were in my head while I was waiting for the CRC 100 jet to take off from London headed to Winnipeg. Today was a long day. The one thing which I could not help but to think that this was unlike anything I have ever attended before. This is seen by the General Synod water bottles, coffee mugs and bags, raveling anything Laurentian has ever given in frosh kits.

I'm off...its way too weird ajusting to the time difference.
